Marijuana refers to the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica plant. Marijuana is a psychoactive drug that contains close to 500 chemicals, including THC, a mind-altering compound that can have harmful health effects for some people.

Utah has a medical cannabis (marijuana) program where patients with specific health conditions can work with a medical provider to use cannabis as a medical treatment. Like other prescription drugs, medical cannabis should only be used with a medical provider's supervision.

• Smoking the dried plant (buds and flowers) in a rolled cigarette (joint), pipe, or bong.
• Vaping liquid or wax marijuana in an electronic cigarette.
• Eating baked goods and candies that contain marijuana products (these are called edibles).
• Drinking beverages that contain marijuana products.
• Using oils and tinctures that contain marijuana products and can be applied to the skin.

In Utah, recreational use is illegal. This means only people with a medical cannabis card can use marijuana as a medical treatment.

Even in states where recreational marijuana use is legal, only adults ages 21 and older can buy and use it. It is never legal for teens to use marijuana recreationally.
